Counting sheep isn’t just for falling asleep

Normally, counting sheep is for falling asleep. But in Aridnyk, tallying the most sheep wins you the game, and as a Hutsul shepherd, you want as many as possible.

Aridnyk is a beautifully illustrated tile-laying and movement board game from Boardova Games, deeply rooted in traditional Hutsul mythology and folklore. If you are looking for a tactical yet accessible game to add to your collection, here is our full breakdown of how it plays and why it earned our “Low Spoon” stamp of approval.

🥄 Low Spoon Approved Board Game: Easy to learn, play, and teach. There is no heavy memory management needed, and the game setup is an absolute breeze. 👩‍❤️‍👨 Player Count Played At: 2 players.

How to Play Aridnyk: Gameplay and Rules

The core premise of Aridnyk is wonderfully simple, making it highly accessible for casual gamers while maintaining tactical depth for strategy fans. On your turn, you place a terrain tile into the center grid, take an action, and gain a resting bonus before drawing a new tile to replenish your hand.

Each tile features brilliant double-sided utility:

  • Placement Actions (Black Icons): Left-side icons dictate your active movement and placement actions.
  • Resting Bonuses (White Icons): Right-side icons determine your resource gains at the end of a turn.

These dual-purpose actions allow you to move your shepherd or a powerful mythic spirit across the growing landscape, gather sheep, or draw powerful cards.

Interacting with Spirits and Mitigating Hazards

If your shepherd ends their movement on the same space as a spirit, you can trade for a completely unique action! There are 5 spirits that enter the strategic board over time, starting with Aridnyk himself. Each features a distinct trade action you’ll want to exploit (seriously, don’t overlook Aley!).

However, you’ll need to navigate the grid carefully. Watch out for river tiles—landing on a river costs you 2 sheep, and we want more sheep. Always. ❌🌊

Managing Your Hand: Plot Cards & Trinkets

To maximize your flock, you’ll want to utilize the card economy. We were actually surprised by how many cards we managed to cycle through in a single playthrough:

  • 🃏 Plot Cards: Mid-game secret objectives that reward a major influx of sheep if satisfied.
  • ⚒️ Trinkets: Powerful, one-time abilities. If a trinket doesn’t fit your strategy, you can even sell it off to Drizt for alternative benefits!

Once all the terrain tiles have been placed into the central grid, the game ends, and the shepherd with the most impressive flock wins.

Aridnyk Review: What Welcomed Us to the Table?

Stunning Production Value and Components

What immediately stood out for us upon opening the box was the stellar production value. The player reference cards are incredibly helpful for quick rule checks, and the custom spirit meeples and artwork have a massive amount of personality.

Deeply Satisfying Tactical Movement

Mechanically, I love that you aren’t just navigating your own pieces. Sometimes you are manipulating the spirits in highly strategic, planned-out ways to block opponents or set up massive point combos. This entirely prevents the gameplay from feeling like a frantic race, instead turning it into a beautifully expanding wilderness where your flock grows while the myths wander alongside you.

Final Thoughts on Aridnyk at Two Players

Amy and I really enjoyed our time with Aridnyk. The Hutsul mythology theme is incredibly engaging, the core gameplay loop is rock solid, and it’s a total low-spoon experience that is a joy to get to the table.

A fair warning, though – it can feel pretty stressful watching your opponent gather twice as many sheep as you early on! But don’t pack up too early; the endgame Plot Card scoring means you can absolutely pull off a lastminute catch-up victory.

If you love tile laying board games with rich themes and excellent table presence, Aridnyk is definitely one to check out.
